Vaginal regeneration: Does it hurt?

So, you're thinking about going for vaginal regeneration therapy with the MonaLisa Touch... but will it hurt?

You've probably read that the vaginal regeneration procedure is life changing. Form new blood vessels, collagen and elastin, check. Increase hydration and your vagina's natural moisture, check. Restore vaginal tissue to a healthy, functional state, check. Improve bladder control, quadruple check.

But fitting a laser probe into the vagina? Pulsing laser beams into vaginal tissue? Isn't that painful?

Here's what you can expect:

  • The MonaLisa Touch procedure is similar to a PAP.

  • Like a PAP, you may feel discomfort when the metal probe is inserted into the vagina.

  • During treatment, you'll feel a vibration and warming sensation.

  • Numbing cream is applied to the exterior to minimize discomfort.

  • The treatment takes less than 10 minutes.

Imagine, one treatment will give you a healthier vagina, natural lubrication, and stronger bladder control - something that many of my patients thought they could never regain. A full course of three treatments gives life-changing results.

The earlier you start treatments before the tissues becomes more dry and thin, the easier it is to insert the laser probe into the vagina. If a regular PAP usually hurts, the first vaginal regeneration treatment may be a bit uncomfortable. The second and third treatments become easier as the tissues become healthier.

During treatment:

  1. The vaginal probe is inserted fully into the vagina just like a speculum during a PAP.

  2. As the probe is slowly pulled out, the probe is rotated inside the vagina to deliver laser therapy to the vaginal walls. You will feel vibrations from the laser beam.

  3. As the exiting probe nears the outer third of the vaginal canal, you will feel a warming sensation.

  4. As the probe nears the opening of the vagina, you may feel a slight pinch. I try to minimize this discomfort with numbing cream applied before the procedure starts.

  5. And finally, once we have treated the vaginal canal, we use a separate probe to stregthen the area around the clitoris and urethra, the lips (labia), and the area between the vagina and the anus (posterior perineum). Once again, numbing cream minimizes any discomfort.

Why use both vaginal and external probes?

While it's important to strenghen and regenerate the tissues of the vaginal canal, it's also important to target the outer skin and vulvar area which enhance comfort and bladder control. Treatment on the outer part will increase healing of tears or surgical cuts (episiotomies) that may have occured during vaginal deliveries.
